Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Review!

Did you know that the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey is back with an all new and updated show. One of the biggest things they've updated is that the show no longer features live animal acts, instead you'll see an adorable robot dog performing some tricks instead along with an action packed show. The team at Ringling went all around the globe to collect a variety of acts to perform in their new show. We were recently invited to check out their show when they were in Phoenix.

The show last about two hours with a short intermission between, they've set everything up to where you can see the action no matter where you sit. Not only do they have main focus acts in the center, but they often had secondary acts to the far sides of the state as well so the show felt up close and personal. The way the show flows is done so well, the staff are very quick with getting the stages changed out and making sure the next act is ready to go.

We were very happy with all of the acts who went on. There were some pretty awesome tricks and stunts that take years to master. The mixture of acts from someone playing the drums to acrobats jump roping on a tight rope and fast paced bike stunts this show is sure to have something for everyone's taste in acts.

They are currently on tour & may be stopping by a city near you. Tickets range in price depending on where you choose to sit. This show is completely family friendly & fans of all ages will enjoy this show. The new show was a lot of fun to watch, we enjoyed it and we are glad we were able to attend to see all the new acts that have been added. I look forward to seeing what they do next! Stop by their website to see where they are headed to next.

Maricopa County Home Show!

When it comes to the weather in the summer here in Arizona, inside events are a must! Instead of being stuck in the house all day hiding from the heat, going to an indoor event can be a great way to get out of the house while avoiding the sun. The Maricopa County Home Show is a family friendly event where you can not only find services for your home such as yard maintenance, or blinds but there are also small local businesses selling things like soaps, bags, plants and more. You'll also find spots like hotels, dog training and more offering specials for anyone who signs up at the home shows.

While you are walking through looking at all the booths, you'll also be able to test out certain things like massagers that can be placed onto any chair, full massage chairs, mattresses from some local mattress stores and depending on if food vendors are there, you'll have the chance to try out some treats as well. The vendors at the home shows can vary depending on which location the show is hosted at. When it was hosted at the fairgrounds there seemed to be quite a few more local small businesses selling assorted goodies vs bigger vendors like electricians, windshield replacement, etc. The three main spots the events seem to be hosted at are the Statefarm Stadium, The Fair grounds downtown and Westworld in Scottsdale.

We enjoy going to the home shows because we like browsing the range of plants sellers have & we usually purchase several while we are there. We also like that they put on live demos and classes showing you different aspects of gardening which can be very helpful for beginners. You can find a list of seminars & workshops on their website prior to the show so you can figure out what time everything starts & where to be. Some of the workshops are simply demonstrations you will watch, and others are hands on with small freebies you can take home like potting succulents or creating small projects.

If you have children under the age of twelve, they offer a kid's craft corner that has everything your child needs to complete a project they have set up for the day. If you have older kids attending, they also have a handmade headquarter that is similar, but with crafts that are more advanced. Each show last for three days, you can attend just one day or all three days if you want to go back. The next event will be September 27th-29th at Westworld in Scottsdale, tickets are $6 per adult and children under the age of twelve are free. Find more information on their next show on their website!

Arizona Renaissance Festival see it before it's gone!

There are only three weekends left to visit the Arizona Renaissance Festival before it is over for this year. If you live in Arizona or plan on being in the area of Gold Canyon, Arizona during one of the next three weekends & are looking for something to do, you should go enjoy a day of fun at the festival. If you don't know what the Arizona Renaissance Festival is, it is a chance to "step back in time" and visit a renaissance themed town where you'll find street performers, vendors, food, jousting knights, royalty and more. It has something to offer for everyone.

The festival has so much to offer that you may not get everything done in one day, so it is nice to pre-determine what you'd like to do on the day that you visit. Last year we got caught up at looking at all of the shops that we weren't able to see many shows, so this year we mainly focused on seeing shows and looked at the stores when we had a bit of down time between the performances we wanted to see & we feel like it balanced out a lot better this time around. The shops & vendors are all small business who set up shop at the festival, there are a lot of them that are there every year but sometimes you will find new shops to browse.

Know Before You Go;

★ Get there early! Doors open at 10:00am with shows starting shortly after the gates opening. Lines for parking & to get in can get a bit long so the earlier you get there the less you will miss from waiting in line. Normal parking is free, VIP parking is available but passes sell out quickly at the start of the season.

★ Tickets are $34 per adult & $22 per child, you can purchase tickets online, at the gates or at Bashes/Food City.

★ Bring cash! While many of the vendors do accept credit cards the food lines, rides and games are cash only & there are very few ATM's on the property.

★You are allowed to bring a water bottle into the festival, their website states it needs to be a 16-24oz factory sealed bottle. However I saw plenty of people with their own re-usable water bottles on the grounds.

★ Some of the performance areas are dirt/grass seating only, if you do not wish to stand or sit on the ground you can bring a blanket along with you to sit on. I have a round sitting blanket I like to bring for us to sit on & rest our belongings on.

★ Bring sunscreen, hand wipes or hand sanitizer. Even on a cloudy day sunscreen is a great idea to bring so you don't get a sunburn. I also suggest bringing hand sanitizer or hand wipes so you can clean your hands before eating. There are bathrooms however lines can get pretty long so having wipes is a fast & easier alternative. Umbrellas can also be nice to bring to help protect you from the sun as some areas such as the jousting arena have no shade.

★ You can get your hand stamped for same day re-entry. This is great because if you are looking for ways to save $$$ or have been a previous year and don't like their food options you can always bring a cooler with a lunch to leave in your car. It also allows you to run out if you forgot anything in your car, or need to put something into your car that you are tired of carrying around.

Each weekend of the festival has a different theme which range from Pirate weekend to Time Travelers, they have a full calendar on their website you can check if you want to visit on a specific weekend. You are allowed to dress up, so certain themed weekends may be more appealing to you than others. Some weekends will be more packed than others due to the themes, last year we went on pirate weekend and it was extremely packed so this year we made sure to avoid pirate weekend. Instead we went for "Wizards and Wonder", it still became a little crowded in the afternoon though it was significantly less people than the weekend we went on last year.

There are plenty of fun carnival style games such as dart throwing, tomato throwing, and more to play along with some fun rides that kids, teens and even some adults might enjoy. How are there rides at a spot that is supposed to be set in the renaissance times? None of the rides are controlled by electricity they are all man powered, each ride is set up to allow it to be worked and controlled by the staff members working the ride. Such as the ride seen two photos above, a set number of staff will hold onto the boats & run/push the swings along then let go once it picks up speed.

We enjoyed our visit, it is always fun getting to dress up, browse small artists stalls, grab a bite to eat and watch some entertaining shows. It is a great way to spend a day with friends or loved ones while creating memories that will last for years to come. This is something we try to do as a yearly tradition together as a family, I also went several times when I was a child and loved it so I am very happy I can continue enjoying the experience along with getting to take my own children.

Is this something you think you would enjoy visiting? Have you ever been to a Renaissance festival, or anything similar?

Harlem Globetrotters Live!

I am not really a fan of any sport, however one show I am more than happy to see is the Harlem Globetrotters. They are not just basketball, but a whole spectacular that is enjoyable for the whole family. I've known about the Globetrotters since I was young as my great grandmother loved watching them every time they were on TV, so getting to see them live is extra exciting because it reminds me of her. They are currently on their 2023 tour & recently stopped in Arizona for a few days, we were lucky to catch one of their shows while they were here.

We had a lot of fun the last time we seen them so the kids were excited to see them again this year. There are always fans of all ages from small babies to seniors, and everyone always looks like they are having a fantastic time. Best of all the shows are always different, our experience this time was completely different from the last along with a change up in the roster so we were able to see players we haven't seen yet. The entire event is fast paced & will keep you on your toes waiting to see what happens next. It is crazy how quickly the show goes by, you'll be having so much fun you won't even be watching the time. As I mentioned, they aren't playing just basketball but they are also putting on a show so it breaks up the game a bit, gets the crowed laughing & happy.

I like that they have two different show times during the day, one at 2pm and another at 7pm. This time around we decided to go with the 2pm show. We had a lot of fun at the show, there are so pretty cool tricks to see & they always involve the crowd which adds an intimate setting to it. Looking for ways to save some money while at an event like this with the family? The footprint center where this event was held recently started a program where you can get a free ride on the metro to the event (and back) with your ticket to the event. So if you don't mind a slightly longer commute you can park at a park & ride then ride for free to the event saving $30+ on parking. I would also suggest eating ahead of time as the food/drinks can be a bit pricey at the venue.

After the show the team sticks around to sign shirts, basketballs, etc. so if you are a big fan & want an autograph be sure not to miss it. If you don't have something for them to sign, there is merchandise for sale around the venue. Check out their tour schedule to see if they are headed to a city near you, you won't regret going to one of their shows. I will be sharing some highlights from the show over on my instagram page.

Monster Jam - A review of the October AZ show!

Monster Jam has come back to Arizona & has several more shows around the US to finish off this years tour. This is a fantastic event for families to attend even if you aren't the biggest fan of monster trucks, the energetic shows & crazy stunts the drivers are able to pull off with these massive trucks will keep you engaged with the show.

Watching these giant trucks is exciting, but the fun begins even before the drivers get in their trucks & bring the engines to life. Most of the show allows you the chance to purchase a "Pit Pass" in addition to your normal ticket which will grant you access to the pre-show pit party. Pit Party passes are $20 each. You'll be able to see the trucks up close, take photos in front of them, meet the drivers to get photos with them or have them sign something, participate in activities like the drawing area for kids and have a chance to buy some cool merch to take home. It is a neat experience to do at least once with your kids & you'll have some awesome photos to keep to look back on the memories for years to come. We were able to participate in the pit party & my kids wanted to get a photo in front of Grave Digger which is the truck I wanted to & did take a photo in front of when I was about the same age as my daughter.

Ticket prices vary depending on where you sit, but it doesn't matter where you sit if it is in the front row section or at the top of the stadium in the upper half you'll have a great view of the trucks and the course they perform on. What is cool about the course is that they bring out some construction equipment in-between the different rounds & they change the course by moving the dirt around to get rid of smaller jumps and make other sections wider. The trucks & drivers will change from event to event, however they have a online section where you can view the current drivers and trucks that will be appearing at the moment. My daughter was a little bummed the two trucks & one driver she really wanted to see were not at this event, but there were a few new trucks we were able to check out.

The show starts off with some head to head races, the winners of each head to head will then go against each other until it is down to the final winner. The race includes them making two laps & completing two jumps, the one who does it the fastest is the winner. After this it is time for an intermission which allows them to work on the trucks & repair anything that might have broken or needs to be re-charged from the races. During this time they have some entertainment happening down in the race area, they had some adorable small children come out on mini monster truck electric cars and race down the track.

The second half of the show is a free style competition where the drivers will attempt to complete two tricks within a set amount of time. They show you a list of tricks they can attempt on the board before the competition starts & will go over which tricks they attempted/completed once the drivers are finished to help you understand which tricks you saw if you aren't familiar with each one. Monster Jam has a website that fans can visit during the event called The Judges Zone, this is for the free style competition. When the driver has completed their round fans will have sixty seconds to lock in a score on the website which is then calculated & will give the driver their score for the round. Wrecks happen, but that doesn't mean you'll get a low score, you can really tell the fan favorites.

We saw an absolutely insane stunt while we were there pulled off by the driver of The Black Pearl. When attempting to do a back flip in his truck, the Black Pearl started rolling onto it's back. It happens, especially when drivers are attempting to do a flip, usually it means they are out since their truck crashed. That wasn't the case this time around, he actually managed to get himself out of the situation & correct the truck back to being on its tires and continued on with his round. I could not believe what I saw with my eyes nor could the crowd, everyone was going nuts & many people even jumped to their feet cheering & screaming. In case you are wondering, yes, I did manage to capture it on camera & will have a reel of it up on my instagram page so you can see it too.

My family had a fantastic time at this event, it is a great family friendly event. My kids can't wait to see them again. A quick note before I finish off this post, this event is very loud!!! It can be a little overwhelming for children and some children may not like how loud it gets, I highly suggest bringing a pair of headphones to protect their ears or buy one when you are at the event. Also don't forget to check the website of which ever venue they visit while in your home city to check for any rules you may need to be aware of, for example our venue does not allow backpacks, purses, etc your belongings need to be in a clear stadium approved sized bag.

Arizona Renaissance Festival 2020!

If you've never been to the Arizona Renaissance Festival then you are missing out! Every year during the months of February & March a small Renaissance village off of Highway 60 in Gold Canyon, Arizona comes to life with games, music, festivities and more. Tickets are $28 per adult and $18 for children 5-12, they are open on weekends only from 10am until 6pm rain or shine.

For those who are a fan of dressing up, you are allowed to dress up for the festival and they even offer special event weekend days such as "Pirate day" and "Time Traveler's Day". We've seen a wide variety of costumes at the festival including pirates, fairies, dragons, walking trees, witches, a wolf, a cheetah, and we've even seen someone walking around with a brightly colored TV on their head. We enjoy dressing up ourselves and usually go as pirates/a elf/and a witch. The festival is very easy to reach and they have traffic handled quite nicely so you won't have to deal with too much of a traffic jam.

Can you have fun at the festival without spending a fortune? That all really depends on what all you are wanting to do at the festival, all of the shows including the jousting are free with entry ticket. In addition to the shows there are rides, games, tons of shops, lots of different foods, a petting zoo, a torture museum and more that all vary in price. You can find some cheaper souvenirs in the $4-$10 range and then you'll also find items to buy in the $200+ range, food varies as well drinks start at $2, and food starts at around $4 for a slice of pizza, there are also a few bakeries offering sweets. We've had festivals where the only thing we bought was food and then sometimes we find thing we want to pick up, this time around we each found something we wanted to purchase, the kids went on a ride and we bought lunch for the kids plus a mixed drink for my husband, in total we spent just under $200 which isn't too bad.

All of the Shoppe keeps are in costume and often speak with you in character which is a lot of fun. You won't have a chance to get bored because there is always something going on, they have several stages that have shows through out the day so there is always something to see. Need to use the bathroom? No problem, the festival has several bathroom facilities located in various areas, and yes they are actual bathrooms not port-a-pottys.

All of the rides and games at the festival are man powered! You won't find a roller coaster or a traditional carousel, instead you'll find rides like a hammock swing ride, swinging swan, and more that are all powered by the staff! Each one runs using the speed and strength of those operating the ride. If you love seeing cute animals stop by the petting zoo to see the normal and the magical! (they have a unicorn), they also have camel and pony rides towards the back where the jousting is.

The jousting is a lot of fun! There is tons of seating but it fills up rather quickly so I'd suggest grabbing a seat shortly before the tournament is set to begin. Shaded spots are very limited so I'd get there extra early to snag one of those. The staff help keep you engaged before and during the tournament and everything is easy to hear/see no matter where you are seated. The show time we attended had a clear winner (the green knight) who won the pre-games and broke two shields vs one but it was announced as a tie.

You'll do a ton of walking so wear comfortable shoes! Being in Arizona it get's quite sunny as you are aware, the spot where the Renaissance is hosted doesn't offer a lot of shade to escape the sun so you'll want to bring something to help or purchase something at the festival to help keep you shaded. My husband and son like wearing pirate hats to protect their heads from the sun, and this trip I bought a parasol to help shade my daughter and I.

We always have a lot of fun at the festival and we look forward to visiting every year, there is a ton to do so you won't be able to see it all in one go but it is worth visiting. We've been to the festival for the last three years in a row and we still haven't seen and done everything the festival has to offer! Next year we'd like to do one of their Escape rooms. We were a little bummed we didn't see our favorite Dragon this year, but other than that there isn't a lot we'd change about the festival. The main thing I'd change is just adding more shading!

💜 Have you ever attended a festival like this where you live? If not, what do you think your favorite part of a festival like this would be?

Celebrate with Medieval Times in Scottsdale,AZ!

My daughters birthday falls just six days after Christmas and my son's birthday is in January, which means they get a few days spread out over a month period where they get to open a few presents! This year we wanted to do something a little extra so we decided to head out and check out the new Medieval Times in Scottsdale to celebrate the kids birthdays a little early. We've been to the one in Anaheim so when we told the kids we were going to the one that just opened here they were beyond excited and couldn't wait to go.

Pulling up we thought the new castle looked wonderful, they had bridges to cross over into the castle and an outside stable. The castle in Anaheim has an outdoor area where you stand in line to get tickets, get your tickets scanned, etc before entering into a welcoming building where you get your seating assigned and get to take photos. The Scottsdale castle has an indoor reception area that reminded us a bit of a hotel entrance, the lines are nice and organized and the staff at the desk give you where you'll be sitting right at check in. You receive your areas colored crown and are then able to take a group photo in front of a green screen if you choose to do so.

How is the inside of the Castle grounds and how does it compare to the castle in Anaheim? If you've been to the castle in Anaheim you'll notice quite a few differences, the first being that there is no court yard to stroll/sit in and the inside seating and shopping is much more limited, I was also sad to see there was no in door viewing area to see the horses. However I do really like that they updated the area where the Queen comes out to sit and interact with guests, and that the announcer has his own balcony which makes him easier to spot and hear when he is directing guests into the main tournament hall. Everything ran smoothly getting into the hall and getting seated at our tables. We got lucky and I think our row was missing a seat so we were able to scoot down a little so we weren't elbow to elbow with the people next to us.

Before we entered into the show I had my husband take the kids to look at the gift shop while I went over to the announcement table to purchase an announcement which the Queen reads during the show as a surprise for the kids! For $10 you can get a short personal announcement and a scroll with the occasion/name to take home, they also have other package options available that come with a gift, etc. (the scroll is delivered at the end of the tournament). The kids were so excited when the queen wished them a Happy Birthday!

How does dinner work? As you can imagine they didn't have the wide assortment of eating utensils we do now during the Medieval times so you eat with your hands! All foods are finger food friendly, and you are provided with a napkin and a wet wipe (they bring out another towards the end of dinner). Each row in the different sections has it's own server to help make everything run smoothly, drinks are served first followed by soup and garlic bread. After the servers are part of the show for a moment then they come back and start serving roasted chicken, corn on the cob, and roasted potatoes. All of the food is pretty delicious and they serve you quite a bit so you are sure to be full by the end of your meal. Afterwards you'll be served which ever dessert they have for the night, we had ice cream. Your server will come by again during dinner to see if you need a drink re-fill and they will come by during dessert to see if any of the adults want coffee.

Did our Knight win? Sadly not this time, perhaps next time! But the show was a lot of fun to watch and it is always fun to participate in cheering for your Knight and booing your opponents. After the show is over the Knights come out to take photos with the crowd. I also loved that before the show started the falconer and his Falcon were out in the hall taking photos with people. The show last for two hours, which is a steal seeing as the price of $45.95 per Adult & $35.95 per child is for the price of a four course meal and a two hour show. For a limited time you can save 40% on Adult tickets and 20% on kids tickets by using code USF4020 at checkout. You can also register to WIN 4 free tickets to a show of your choice (at any of their castles) by clicking HERE.
