Chronicles of Crime 1900 - Review & Giveaway!

Over the last year we've really grown to love mystery and puzzle games, which is why we were so excited to get the trio of games from the Chronicles of Crime the millennum series sold by Lucky Duck Games. Each game is an interactive mystery solving game that uses a mixture of actual boardgame pieces & a phone app. If you missed it, I recently did a review for the first addition to this collection which was called 1400 (read the review here) & now I am back to share Chronicles of Crime 1900 with you. I will be posting 2400 at a later date along with a awesome game called Destinies. All three games in the series use the same interactive app so if you've already downloaded it to play 1400 you won't need to install anything new, simply download the next game you are about to play.

The game is intended for ages 12+ due to some of the topics brought up during the rounds such as mention of drinking, drugs or sexual references. If you would like to have a younger child play with your group it is quite easy to skip over those mentions if you'd like since you will be reading from the app. You can play by yourself to test out your wits or play with four people in total. Games will last for 60-90 minutes depending on how well you are able to string clues together, figure out puzzles and link characters to the crimes. You can purchase the games for $29.99 or purchase a bundle that includes all three along with a expansion pack for $109.

1900 is very similar to 1400, however the biggest difference is that 1900 has actual puzzles to be completed & you aren't able to look at them until the game instructs you to do so. I personally love the mixture of digital visuals & physical cards. When you are investigating the scene one person will be looking around the room using the app as it has a virtual room with a 360 degree view you simply have to move the phone around the room. While that person is looking at the scene they will start naming off anything they see that might be a clue, for example it might be some scattered letters on the floor, foot prints leading out of the room or a box out of place which a second person will be pulling out of the clue pile.

After finding what you think the clues are, you'll use the app to scan all of the clues to see which are needed & which aren't. From time to time you might feel a little stuck & want to look over your clues again without worrying about how much time you have left to figure out the mystery, thankfully there is no need to worry about a time limit with this game. In app it will keep track of time spent going from location to location & talking to different witnesses, however it only does so when each item is scanned meaning you are free to discuss where to go next, what to scan next, and so forth without wasting in game time. If it has started to get late or you want to come back and finish the game at another time it will save the game for you so you can resume again later. On the occasion or two we've done this, we just left all of the physical cards out on the table so we know what we have and haven't done.

So far we've played two of the mysteries that come included with 1900, there are four scenarios in total plus a tutorial round which we suggest doing as it is an extra level of play you get out of the game. Our kids are nine & thirteen, both enjoy playing this to help figure out clues and have helped us pick out some things we may have missed otherwise. My husband and I also enjoy doing the scenarios just the two of us. Is it worth the cost of the game? I would say yes, we have a lot of fun trying to figure everything out and are quite excited when we get close to finishing out a round with close to or at 100%.

I really enjoy seeing the artwork they've put together for all of the cards in this collection, each character is unique, the houses & places are gorgeous and it keeps you entertained while enaged in the game.

Not Another Rubber Ducky (Spooky Toobers) Review!

Rubber ducky you're the one, you make bath time lots of fun. Does anyone else have the sesame street song pop into their head when they think about rubber ducks? Do you also think that rubber ducks are just for kids? There are plenty of adults who collect rubber ducks, there are so many different variations of how they look, it is fun seeing them all. Well now there is a new bath time toy line that celebrates those who like the slightly spookier yet cute supernatural creatures. I want to introduce all of you to a fun brand called Not Another Rubber Ducky that sells floating bath toys that look like various well known supernatural creatures, they are called Spooky Toobers. This is a fun line for kids and adults alike.

How cute & fun do these creatures look floating around on little inflatable tubes? At the moment they have four different creatures to choose from, you can purchase Frankie, Drac, Wolfie or Mummy for $14.99 each. Each toy is free of phthalate, BPA + lead and each one is sealed with a bit of weight inside to keep them floating upright. They are great for the bathtub or in the pool. These cute monsters were designed and created by Johnathan Paine, whose name you may even recognize. He is a digital character sculpture, character modeler & now toymaker - some of his work has been shown in The Incredibles, Ratatouille and UP.  Along with this collection of devilishly cute toys he also has an Etsy shop where he sells cards & prints of some of his creature artwork. I will cover his Etsy shop and some of his work on another post.

My kids love these Spooky Toobers, they might not be at the age where they play with bath toys anymore however they are looking forward to having these on their shelf with their other collectable figures. Each character is unique & show cases both designs and personalities that fit each character such as Wolfie who can be seen howling while floating around on his tube.

Their little feet sticking over the side of the inflatables are adorable, they all seem so relaxed, enjoying the water. It makes you want to get in a floatie and float around the pool too! My favorite out of the four is a two way tie between Wolfie & Drac and my kids can't decide which is their favorite either due to all of them being pretty awesome. I like that there is no hole in the bottom like typical rubber ducks have, thus preventing any water from getting trapped within which makes it to where it will not grow mold inside. They are perfectly balanced, they can be pushed across the tub or pool, they can be spun and twirled and will still stay floating upright.

Do you have a favorite out of the four?

Small Islands - Board game review & giveaway!

It is board game time & also time for a new giveaway! As a family that enjoys playing board games together, we love games that are family friendly. We recently received the chance to check out the game Small Islands, sold by Lucky Duck Games. Every time you play Small Islands the outcome of how the game is set up & who will win is completely different as you build new islands and place out new materials each round. This is a one to four player game for ages 8+ games typically last about half an hour. You can pick it up for $39.99 through their website or use their retailers page to find the games in a store near you.

As with any new game the first round or two might move a little slow as you learn the rules of your new game. Once you have the basic mechanics of the game figured out each round moves rather quickly. The main mission you have in the game is to build islands that show the resources you need on your objective cards. Each player will take a turn placing down a new island tile during the explore phase, using the given rules on how the islands should make logical sense with how they are created, you'll stitch together a cluster of islands out on the water. What do I mean when I say it must make logical sense? It simply means that you can't connect a side with nothing but ocean to a tile that doesn't have a shoreline. You will want the islands to connect and flow properly when laying everything out.

During the rounds of play we've run into tiny islands we've built, while other times we get lucky with getting pieces that are just land in the beginning and end up building a massive island to land on. Once all players have laid out the number of island tiles that are on the navigation tile then players are allowed to "land" their ships on in the world.

Each player has a ship tile that matches the color of their playing pieces. When the navigation stack is depleted one of the players can decide to land their ship, this please taking your ship tile and placing it out on the board in a water area. Each player will then place the number of clan houses they want out on the board, keeping in mind that each island only has a certain amount of spaces for clan houses. Once everyone is completed with laying down their houses you can figure out how many rewards each player will receive.

You figure out the rewards by looking on your objective card, each one is different so not everyone will be after the same thing as you. Between your objective card & reward card for the round you will calculate how many prestige points you'll receive then gather them from the pile. Once all ships have landed or all the island tiles are out, whom ever has the most points is the winner. If you'd like to play the game alone they have instructions in the booklet on how to achieve this.

When we are looking for a quick board game to play if we want to squeeze a game into the afternoon, this is a great go to. With your eye on the prize & your objective in mind you can quickly get through a game with your loved ones, friends or as state even play one player.

PRIZE ALERT:

One lucky winner is going to win a copy of Small Islands!

Driftaway Coffee Subscription box review!

Where are all the coffee lovers at? If you enjoy finding new coffees to try out, you need to check out Driftaway coffee. They offer a subscription service that lets you try out new coffees each month from different countries around the world, each box will have five different coffee samples in it. I was recently invited to try out one of their boxes, both my husband & myself have really been enjoying the experience along with the variety of coffee included.

All of the coffee included in the box are mysteries, they will be packaged with a color instead of the name and flavor notes on them. This allows you to test out the coffee, see if you can guess the flavor notes then you can check out the envelope included that tells you what each coffee is. You can try each one of the coffees on your own or they offer weekly taste tastings alongside a world brewers champion. We went with the tasting them on our own time.

You are able to fill out a subscription profile that allows you to set preferences to flavor notes you already enjoy & they will try to provide you with similar coffee tastes for you to enjoy.  As soon as you open the package you are meet by a strong & delicious coffee aroma. Two things I noticed when looking at all of the coffee samples is that they have your name at the bottom of the label & all of the sample packages are able to be tossed into your compost if you have one. I don't personally have one, however my step-father does so I have been saving the packages to take over and add to his compost bin.

Here are the flavors I received in my Driftaway Coffee subscription box:

Red; Light - Medium Roast from the Colombia, Narino region. It has flavor notes of honey, lemon & golden raisin. You can slightly smell the lemon in the coffee grounds even before you brew it, I enjoyed the fresh scent it added to the aroma notes.

Yellow; Light roast from Ecuador, Pichincha region. It has flavor notes of Raspberry, Cherry & Milk Chocolate. This one has a bit of a fruity fresh taste that is light, airy and quite lovely. This was one of my favorites in the box as I prefer my coffee much lighter than my husband enjoys his.

Blue; Medium roast from Peru, Cusco region. It has flavor notes of brown sugar, vanilla & Molasses. This was a nice coffee that is in the middle of how my husband prefers his coffee & how I prefer mine. The mixture of brown sugar and vanilla is nice.

Green; Medium - Dark roast from Brazil, Minas Gerais region. It has flavor notes of Milk chocolate, malt & roasted almond. This one and the purple were two coffees my husband preferred as they were are a stronger coffee, I generally lean more toward coffee flavors that are sweet & light so these were both right up his alley being more of a bold coffee flavor.

Purple; Dark roast from Kayanza, Burundi Apaneca-llamatepec, El Salvador Huehuetenango, Guatemala. It has flavor notes of smoke spices, molasses & nutty.

Along with the information above you will find a ton of information on each post card that goes with the coffee it matches including who the producers are, what the processing type is, what altitude it is grown at and more. I loved being able to read each card and learning about where the coffee was from. The postcards also include a QR code which will lead you to a video discussing stories behind the coffee, it also allows you to order more of that specific coffee or request more of it in your next box.

I prefer ground coffee which is what I received in my sample packets, each one is able to make one to two pots of coffee depending on how much coffee grounds you prefer to put into the pot. If you want more coffee instead of just a sampler, they have four different size options for your subscription box that range in price from $14.40 for a shipment of 8oz coffee to $34.20 for 2lbs of coffee.

Dead Horse State Park Cabin Rental Review!

One of my favorite places to visit in order to escape a bit of heat during the year is the Cottonwood area which sits just slightly south of Sedona, Arizona. The city of Cottonwood plus the few small cities surrounding it have a lot to offer from the Tuzigoot monument in Cottonwood, to a train ride in Clarkdale, and beautiful views up in Jerome to name a few. It is also home to a fantastic state park called Dead Horse State Park, that offers camping, cabin rentals, fishing, hiking and even horse back riding. It is located at 675 Dead Horse Ranch Rd, Cottonwood, AZ 86326.

Each cabin sleeps up to six people, It is a one room cabin with one full sized bed along with a bunk bed. In your room you will also find a small shelf, a bedside table plus a kitchen table and four chairs. Every cabin has heating and A/C so that you can stay comfortable during your stay, they also allow pets in cabins 3 through 8 so there is no need to worry about leaving your furry baby at home. However, there are no bathrooms inside of the one bedroom cabins, but the bathrooms are really close (about a one minute walk) and are kept up so they are quite clean. So how much will renting a cabin set you back? Renting a cabin will be $60 a night plus a $10 reservation fee which is pretty good especially since most hotels in the area will go for more. You can book a single night or stay up to fourteen nights if you are looking for a longer vacation from the city.

When you book a cabin through their website you are able to see each cabin to select which one you want. Based off of the location and the creepy looking trees directly in front of it, I selected the "Fox" cabin to stay in for our visit. We are a family of four so the cabin was the perfect little size for all of us to move about, I like that they provided the table and chairs because it makes it easier to eat meals or even play a board game. The cabin was overall pretty clean, and included a small trash can for you to dispose of any garbage you have. I suggest packing a large trash bag anytime you rent a cabin or go camping anyway so you don't leave any trash or debris behind in the park.

Cooking is not allowed inside of the cabin itself, however there is a grill right next to the cabin along with a fire pit. Plus Dead Horse State Park is inside of Cottonwood itself, so there are restaurants and shopping centers within a short drive so you could always go grab something for dinner and bring it back. During our stay we went to a BBQ place that is in town and brought everything back with us to eat in the cabin while we watched a movie on our tablet and talked. When evening falls it gets quite dark rather quickly, so don't forget to pack some flashlights so you can see where you are going if you plan on starting a bon fire, heading to the bathroom or forgot something in the car.

The bathrooms they have across the way were a lot cleaner than I had expected which is always nice! The only thing I would change about the cabins at the various state parks we have stayed at are the mattresses, they are so thin and hard. Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay, they have a nice covered Ramada just up behind where we were so you could relax there as well with a larger group of park guests. We took a hike behind our cabin and found a small water fall, went down to the river side, found a cool bridge and more! The next morning when we woke up we got our fishing gear together and went fishing for a while. Our daughter ended up being the only one to catch a fish that day so she was pretty excited.

So if you are looking for a weekend escape, I would check out this great state park or any of our other state parks, several of them having cabins. If a cabin rental isn't your thing they also offer RV spots and tent camping in different sections of the park, as an added bonus if you rent a cabin and have a guest who would prefer to sleep in a tent you can add on a tent for $10 and have them set it up next to the cabin since all of the cabins have a fantastic amount of space between them. If you have small kids I highly recommend stopping into the rangers station when you arrive & ask for a Junior Rangers activity pack. Once your kids fill out the packet which contains crosswords and other fun puzzles, they can return to the rangers station where they will show the packet, say a park pledge & receive a collectable pin they can keep as a souvenir.

If you want to see some of the other State Parks we've visited, click on the "Things to do in Arizona" on the right hand side of my blog or type "State Parks" into the search bar! 🌲

How do you like to stay when outdoors? In a tent, in a cabin, or in an RV?

Farmer Jones Farm at the Chef's Garden Review!

Have you ever wanted to get fresh produce directly from a local farm, but you don't live close enough to a farm to do so? Farmer Jones Farm at the Chef's Garden allows you a chance to order fresh produce and seasonal products directly from their family owned farm to your home. They are based out of Ohio but shipping was quick & everything was well packaged, you can tell everything was packed up fresh at the farm and placed directly into the boxes that ship out each week. Being as how everything is fresh, yes there will be dirt on your produce and items such as spinach aren't pre-cut in a bag so you'll need to wash everything & do some prep before being able to eat it. Some of the products also have some absorbent towels inside of the bags to help with some of the moisture in the bags which also helped to keep everything fresher while it sat in our fridge waiting to be used.

I was lucky enough to be sent one of their best of the season vegetable boxes, a tomato marmalade, and a flowerhouse Rooibos tea. Seasonal boxes will change through out the year, at the moment the boxes contain: Potatoes (we received sweet potatoes), mixed beets, lettuce, spinach, turnips, lacinato kale, kohlrabi, edible flowers, and more. We also received some carrots in our box which were not on the official list, however they do note that depending on availability from the local farms in the area that the variety of produce may vary since they work along side other family owned farms to help bring you delicious home grown foods. As I was taking everything out of the box I immediately started making a mental note of what I wanted to make with all of the goodies.

We are a family of four & there was plenty in this box for all of us to eat. I made several side dishes with these vegetables to go along with our main dish during the week. Some of the dishes I made from these vegetables included sweet potato fries, sweet potato casserole, a delicious mixed salad with micro greens, baked carrots, candies carrots and more! Plus we still have some more carrots and other items we haven't used yet which goes to show just how much was packed into this box.

The tomato marmalade is interesting & different, I hadn't heard of it until receiving this box so I had to look up what it is typically used on or in. It is typically used on toast, crackers, on burgers in place of ketchup, along with many other uses and some even like eating it right out of the jar. It tastes similar to ketchup with a slightly different texture and slightly sweeter, I think this would taste good on toast with a little bit of cream cheese to balance out the flavors. We haven't tried the tea yet, I am looking forward to brewing it though as the information on the box says it will be blue in color.

We were very pleased with the box we received & the assortment of produce included, we were able to make a lot of our favorite sides. The quality of the product was excellent, their boxes range in price depending on how large of a box you'd like to receive, they come in the serving sizes 1-2 people, 2-4 people & 4-6 people ranging from $69-$125. Along with fresh produce they also sell an assortment of honey, bar soap & much more which can be purchased through their website along side their fresh produce.
