Enchant Christmas a family friendly holiday event!

 

One of my favorite parts about the holidays, has always been going to see holiday lights. Every year we go to see the houses in our city that go all out & we also like visiting family friendly Christmas events that offer large light displays. This year was the first year we were able to visit Enchant Christmas & it was lovely. What does Enchant have to offer? Enchant Christmas sets up a large light maze that you & your family can wander through while looking for a number of large light sculptures that are part of a scavenger hunt along with other festive offerings. Keep reading to find out what else you will find at Enchant Christmas. I enjoyed walking around the maze with my family and it was nice that the weather is finally starting to actually be chilly during the day/night so it is finally feeling like winter. Viewing all of the shops was fun as well, everything felt very festive, cozy, inviting & family friendly. Food wise it ranged from tacos, to waffles and desserts like cheese cake on a stick and freshly made donuts. The Christmas tree located in the middle of the maze is massive! You can see it lit up from outside of the venue for a mile or two.

Along with the light maze you will find holiday lights all around the venue & pathways leading up to the venue. Next to the light maze is a ice skating rink that is also lit up! All of the staff members have festive outfits on & are all very friendly. Along with the normal staff positioned around the venue you will also find some performers such as stilt walkers which are fun for all ages to see. The maze was actually pretty large, we enjoyed exploring the area and finding the sculptures along with all of the cute photo opportunity spots they had available. We went later in the evening & were lucky enough that it wasn't completely packed, they have time slots available for tickets & only sell a certain amount per time slot to help prevent it from becoming over-crowded. Before entering the maze you will be handed a scratcher card so you can scratch off the lighted sculptures as you find them, it is a great activity for kids & is even fun for adults. On your way out there is a helper passing out chocolate & there are mail boxes you can place your finished scratcher cards in. 

The Scottsdale Enchant location is located at the Salt River Fields & the way they have it set up is that the maze + ice rink are located in the lower field. There are ramps available for strollers & wheelchairs to make it easier to get down to the lights. Along the upper level of the stadium you'll find "The Village" which is an assortment of shopping vendors along with drink booths, food & of course candy. If you want an extra souvenir to take home they have cocktails + mocktails in cute light up lightbulb shaped bottles, or you can opt for a regular souvenir and buy a magnet, shirt, etc. with the Enchant logo on it. There are also other holiday gifts available from the small shops that have set up including ornaments, hats, jewelry & more.  There is even a small pop-up Build-a-bear station! 

There are also two areas for families with small children. One is called Santa's Landing where you will find Santa for your children to visit, you can take photos yourself or a professional photographer will be on site to snap some photos. The second area is the Little elves play place, where children ages 0-7 can sit down & enjoy Mrs. Clause reading them a story + other activities. Between browsing shops, getting hot chocolate and exploring the light maze we were there for just over an hour. 

How much are tickets? Tickets are $35 per adult & $25.50 for children, infants 0-2 get in for free. If you look at their ticket bundle section they have a family four pack of tickets for $95.20 which will help you save some money if you are buying four or more tickets. They have two parking options when you are checking out they have a Valet service or regular parking, we didn't pre-purchase parking online but when we arrived the staff told us that parking was already included in our tickets so they just had to scan our ticket code & we were set. Ice Skating is an additional cost & needs to be purchased prior to arriving to ensure you can get a spot.

Jurassic Quest - A Dinosaur Experience!

 

Over the weekend we went to check out Jurassic Quest for a family day! We were originally going to visit back in 2020 when they were in Arizona. However, the pandemic had just hit so all the shows were cancelled, so we didn't get a opportunity to visit again until now. What is Jurassic Quest? It is a fun dinosaur adventure & mobile dinosaur museum. They have life sized dinosaur statues, baby dinosaurs & their trainers, interactive kids activities, ride on dinosaurs and more. If you don't have any kind of dinosaur attraction near you, this is a great way to get to experience something similar when they stop by to visit your state. 

General admission is $22 which is for ages 11-64 and children 10 & under had two different purchase options, general admission which is also $22 or Kids unlimited which is $36. I definitely recommend the unlimited wrist band for smaller children, it will save you quite a bit of money since you won't need to buy rides and activities separately and your child will be able to get back in line for the rides & bounce houses as much as they'd like. They are in each location for three days & tickets can sell out so get your tickets early. Many of the time slots of our location were sold out for Saturday & Sunday, the line was a pretty decent size when we first arrived but the staff were quick at getting everyone through and into the event. Everything is self guided & is pretty easy to navigate where you are going.

This event is fantastic for small kids (under 10), it is an exciting space for them to explore and all of the bounce houses plus the ride on dinosaurs will help burn off some of their extra energy for the day. While we were there we saw seven or eight large dinosaurs the kids could ride on, three off them actually walked along a set distance while the others were in place like the one shown above but still had hands & heads that moved to make it feel alive. There were also several bounce houses, a fossil dig area where kids could use a paint brush to uncover bones in a large sand pit or they could go to the table area and break apart a fossil dig block. I think the only thing I would have changed about the location where this was hosted at here, is that the space was bigger. Based off of what I've seen online it felt like they weren't able to fit everything into the space at Bell Bank Park.

If you get snackish, they had a small concession stand with food and drinks. They also had a gift shop set up where you could buy shirts, light up wands or dinosaur shaped balloons. Trainers were walking around with adorable baby dinosaurs in their arms that you could take photos with, they also had a raptor show where kids could watch a raptor do a few trips and touch it. Before leaving they had a few photo opportunities set up where you could take a photo inside of an egg, or with a baby dinosaur. While it definitely felt geared specifically for small children, this was still a neat event for adults to see some massive dinosaurs & spend some time with the family. We enjoyed walking around and talking about the variety of dinosaurs they had on display and were able to see a baby dinosaur as well. 

I think they did a great job with setting up the large dinosaurs and the backgrounds that go with them. There are a lot of great photo opportunities in front of the dinosaurs & they had a variety of signs with information on the dinosaurs which is always fun because you might learn something new. This is a traveling event so they are in a new city every weekend, if this is an event that your family would love head over to their website to see which city they are headed to next. They will also have Canadian stops this year as well!

Halloween Town Pumpkin Patch in Chandler,AZ!

 

Halloween Town in Chandler is open again for the Halloween season. This mini carnival is perfect for parents with small kids as this pumpkin patch is specifically geared towards children ages 2-8. There were about twelve different rides set up for kids to ride on along with a mini maze & large slide.

Know Before You Go:

• Admission is $5 per person for ages 2+, Children under two are free. Parking is free.
• All you can ride wrist bands are $25 - I suggest buying them only for the smaller children, most of the rides are set for specific heights + weights. My nine year old son was too tall for a few of the rides & the only thing us adults went on was the burlap sack slide. 
• Game tickets are $1 each, I believe they may sell them in a cheaper bundle if you buy a certain amount. - There are five different games, the cheapest one cost $3 or 3 tickets 
• Food Prices range from $5-$16 and drinks range from $3-$4. I would give the food a two out of five stars, three of us ordered pizza which was a little burnt & I was told had tasted like it wasn't fresh. My chicken tenders basket was $16 it came with three small chicken tenders and some fries, the fries weren't hot. I do not see any thing on their website about not being able to bring snacks, small children tend to snack a lot through out the day so I would bring a snack or two for them to enjoy while waiting in between rides.
• If you plan on eating at the event there are hand sanitizer stations, however I recommend bringing some wet wipes or baby wipes to clean your hands before eating. 
• There is face painting, a pumpkin patch, pumpkin painting, a mini hay maze, bounce houses & fun photo opportunities. 
• The pumpkin patch is located in the parking lot of Chandler Fashion Square - 3111 W Chandler Blvd Chandler, AZ 85226
• They open now until October 31st. M-F they are open 4pm-10pm & weekends from 11am-10pm.

Halloween Town was busy, but it wasn't overly crowded. The ride lines, food lines & game lines were short which is great when dealing with small children. I liked how they had everything laid out, the pumpkin patch was easy to navigate & there were plenty of areas to explore. Everything was very straightforward & easy to understand as they had plenty of signs letting you know how much everything was and if you did end up needing help there were staff members all over who were friendly & there to help out. 

Some of the games are a little more challenging than the others so a few of them offer small prizes even if you only score a point in the game. Each of the kids ended up winning a small ice cream shaped stuffed toy, a lollipop stuffed toy and they also have a dragon plus some cotton candy and a small pumpkin.

We thought that Halloween Town was cute & it is perfect for families with small children. If you have a mixture of ages the older kids will have fun playing the games, although they may not be able to go on many of the rides so I'd see how many they could go on before buying older kids a all you can ride wrist band. Older kids can also still enjoy face painting & the pumpkin patch where you'll find dozens of pumpkins of assorted sizes, shapes and colors to choose from.

Harlem Globetrotters Live!

 

To be honest, I have never been a big fan of sports, however the Harlem Globetrotters is different when it comes to me wanting to watch them. They provide more than just a game of basketball, it is a show and a whole experience that is a lot of fun to see in person (or on TV). My great-grandma was a big fan of theirs and always watched them on TV so I remember seeing some of the crazy things they did as a kid watching it with her. My husband enjoys them as well & has always wanted to see them live so when I was provided with the chance to be able to take my husband and kids to see a live show, how could I say no?

The Harlem Globetrotters recently came to Arizona and played not one, but three different cities. We attended the game in downtown Phoenix at the Footprint Center. Getting into the center and into our seats went smoothly and both teams were out on the court practicing before the game so that everyone could watch. 

In total the show was about two hours long and the entire time you were either smiling, shouting with excitement or laughing at something that was going on. All of the players really put a lot into their performances and it showed, they all seemed like they were having a great time which in turn put the crowd into an even better mood. Some of the seats were court side and the players interacted with some of the members sitting in those seats which was fun to see, one of the husbands was drawn out to the floor to dance with a player and he was even swept up off his feet by the player. 

My family had a great time watching the crazy moves the players were able to pull off along with some of the silly scripted parts like Hammer giving his number out to a woman in the crowed then getting a phone call right after that was put onto speaker, who was calling? A bill collector trying to get him to pay a past due bill, and the whole time he was on the phone he was still playing ball. We also had a lot of fun watching both of the mascots they had come out and do performances, we especially loved Big G. It is an event I would happily attend again, and it is an event I would recommend to anyone looking for something new and exciting to go see even if you aren't a basketball fan.

Monster Jam Live Event Review!

Even if you aren't the biggest fan of monster trucks, it is still an event you should attend at least once as you'd be surprised just how exciting it can be. Monster Jam came through Arizona over the weekend at an event they hosted in Glendale, AZ at the State Farm Stadium. The event itself is a lot of fun, however I recommend arriving early by at least an hour, traffic into the parking lot can get a little crazy especially since there was another event going on at the same time, so it took us about 45 minutes waiting in line before we were able to park and that was prior to going through the security check and getting to our seats. Before you even step foot into the stadium you start to get excited because you can hear the rumble of the trucks massive engines and the cheers from the crowd going nuts over the tricks and jumps the trucks are able to pull off. 

Once we got inside our seats were easy to find. The crowd was full of energy and excitement everyone was ready to see some fun tricks, vote on their favorite trucks and potentially see some trucks wreck. I haven't personally been to a show since I was a kid, so I was looking forward to seeing if anything had changed. My kids and husband have never been, so it was an all-new experience for them. Monster Jam has a live app you can use during the show to vote on your favorite trucks and their performances to help them rank up on the score board to see who the ultimate winner would be. 

With so many crowd favorites it was a close competition with some of the trucks such as Grave Digger, Son-uva Digger, Solider of Fortune, Zombie and more. Each driver has a unique set of skills and a preferred method of tricks. 

It is absolutely crazy some of the tricks they are able to pull with the massive trucks they drive. Seeing the drivers being able to get the trucks onto two wheels balancing the trucks ever so perfectly so they won't topple and end up upside down. We were also able to see a two wheeled donut, some successful and unsuccessful tries at flipping their trucks and yes, I got videos of it! I will be sharing highlights of the event over on my Instagram page. I can only imagine how much fun it is to drive one of these massive trucks and do the amount of insane tricks that they do, it takes a lot of dedication, practice and a level of calmness to be able to get the massive amount of weight these trucks weigh to cooperate with what you are wanting them to do. 

There is a delicate balance with these trucks and the many turn overs you'll see goes to prove how you can go from doing an absolutely crazy stunt one second to being on your back the next because the ramp happened to tip your truck a little too much to one side and gravity took over.  

The first half of the event features the drivers seeing who could keep the trucks on two wheels for the longest amount of time, the longest running champion was Son-uva digger who managed to get almost 10 seconds. It is insane to see the time afterwards because it feels like it lasts several minutes then they announce it was only seconds they were up on two wheels. Each truck had two chances to test out their skills using which ever ramp around the venue they wanted to assist their trucks getting vertical. It is probably the truck most people know the name of and is my favorite truck as well, which truck is that? Grave digger of course but seeing son-uva digger was great as well because the driver Ryan had some of the best tricks of the night. I also really enjoyed watching Solider Fortune out on her runs, even when she ended up flipping her truck on it's backside she was still high spirited and did some cart wheels out on the track once she got out of her truck. All of the drivers had a lot of energy and were pumping up the crowd with their fun mini interviews during the event.

Following this there was a short intermission where they fixed anything on the trucks that needed to be fixed, fans could go get snacks, use the bathrooms, etc. then they came back for a free for all. Each of the drivers has a pretty amazing team behind them, they only have a set amount of time in between each half of the show to repair any damages that may have been done to the trucks. This includes rebuilding any part of the truck that may have fallen off during their stunts, replacing parts that burst or broke from how hard these trucks are driven during their short time out, and more. 

During the free for all each truck was given two minutes to drive the course and perform any number of tricks they wanted which were then judged using an app fans had access too. During the event as a whole, we saw some very high jumps, a few awesome flips and several accidents as well where trucks either ended up upside down or on their sides, and one even started to catch fire however the crew was really fast and put it out almost as soon as it had started. The show was pretty exciting because you never know what might happen during an event. My kids both enjoyed the show.

Good things to keep in mind before attending an event: If you don't want to spend a lot on food at the venue I suggest eating a head of time, arrive at least an hour before so that you have time to get into the parking lot, get through security, get to your seats and get settled in before everything starts. If you have small children, it can also get very loud during the event so it might be a good idea to bring a pair of protective head phones for them.

Water Lantern Festival Review!

I've always loved the movie Tangled & the scene where Rapunzel and Flynn are out on the boat and you see all the lanterns floating on the water that start to rise up into the sky. When I saw that a event called the Water Lantern Festival was coming that mimics part of the scene I knew it was something I wanted to check out. The Water Lantern festival isn't specific to one state, they have dates for all over the country and recently announced their 2022 dates (they will be adding more), the event we went to was in Tempe,AZ.

Tickets range in price, there are some discounts if you order early. The basic prices with fees are $31.96 for adults and $14.47 for children, each ticket comes with a draw string bag that contains a lantern kit, a marker, & a scavenger hunt ticket. Deluxe tickets are $45.96 and come with everything mentioned along with a mandala throw. Along side the festival there were several food trucks, and several different local vendors to shop from as well as the water festival merch booth and stage.

The event was at Kiwanis Park, We've never been to the park before so we weren't sure what to expect. Parking when we got there was a little crazy as the park is inside of a neighbor hood and parking lot space was limited so the entire neighborhood was packed with cars looking for spots in front of houses, waiting for people to leave etc. There was also a church event and a memorial going on at the same park so there was a lot going on! Thankfully we did find a parking spot about a quarter mile away with an easy walking path to the event. 

Even with the large amount of people at the park the event staff had everything moving along quite smoothly. We got into the check out line and were only in it for two minutes before being called up to be helped, they were well organized, speedy and friendly. We had the deluxe packs that came with a mandala throw, we ended up getting all of the same color so I asked if there was anyway to swap for another color as my daughter wanted an orange one and the staff said it was no problem and quickly switched it out.

There was a nice range of food trucks and vendors to check out and the event staff had a small stage set up where they were allowing people to sing, show off their talents, etc. As it drew closer to launch time for the lanterns they asked anyone who wanted to come up and share why they were there to do so. Some were there just to have fun, to go on a date night, to get out of the house, and others were there to remember a loved one, send their dreams or goals out into the ether and just relax. 

Everything was calm, the event seemed pretty mellow and everyone seemed to be having a good time. A large portion of the event was just relaxing in the grass decorating the lanterns, it was fun but also a pain trying to figure out what I wanted on each side of the lantern! It was awesome seeing all the different designs my kids and husband did. When everyone started putting their lanterns in it was beautiful to watch all of them floating out into the water. Shortly after we got in our car and went home. Where do the lanterns go? They have a clean up crew who goes through and picks up everything from the water and around the park to make sure the park is in the same condition (if not cleaner) than it was when they arrived.

Touring the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary!

I have always loved seeing, learning about and being near wildlife, and it is something my children grew up loving too so when we had a chance to visit the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary we were all very excited. We all had different animals we were hoping to see on our trip, the kids wanted to see everything, my husband was most excited about the crocodiles and I wanted to see the lizards. We knew we were going to see quite a few reptiles, but holy moly we were amazed by just how many reptiles and animals they have at their sanctuary. 

Their website has their mailing address only, you are provided the actual address of the sanctuary when you sign up for the tour. When we had first arrived, we thought we were a little lost until we spotted the sign for the sanctuary. When we started the tour we found out why we thought we got lost in a residential neighborhood! It is because the house that is on the land where the sanctuary is was originally owned by the owners parents, and they later bought the property to use for the sanctuary. Don't worry about the space! the property is almost three acres with some a bit of desert around it to spare. Tours are $20 per adults and $15 for children, the money made from the tours goes back towards the cost of feeding and caring for all of the reptiles/animals.

The Phoenix Herpetological Society takes in and cares for abandoned pets, reptiles that are illegal in the state, yet still kept as pets and removed by the authorities and animals that have been wounded and need care. They have a zoo license and also work with the Az fish & game department when they have animals that need a place to stay or a new home. Along with taking in animals, they also have an adoption program where you can adopt a snake or turtle.

As soon as you come through the property gates you are meet by a huge enclosure full of large tortoises, I couldn't believe how many we saw. They had been feed shortly before we arrived so they were all moving around the enclosure, the noise of all the turtles shuffling was quite unique and the noises their shells made when they were climbing over each other was interesting as well. A little further in they have smaller tortoises we thought were babies, however they were just a different species and won't grow any larger than what they were. 

Both of our tour guides were extremely friendly, full of information, ready to answer questions, and really seemed to love their job and the animals.  Our group was a bit on the smaller size with just eighteen people in the tour group. There was a ton to see and a lot of information shared so I won't be able to cover everything in this post, but that will make you want to visit even more so you can see and hear everything for yourself! The first stop on the tour is right by the front gate learning about the different tortoises and getting to hold them (the kids loved that), they even have a few Galapagos turtles which were amazing to see, they are massive! There are also a few other enclosures around the property that house tortoises, in total we were told they have over 600 of them. 

After the tortoises we were taken to an area that had two raccoons, opossums, a otter, iguanas and more. You were able to be right next to the cages and see the animals quite clearly, in fact on the otter cage you were allowed to put your hand flat up against the cage and he would sniff your hand. I was so happy and excited to be that close to an otter! The next stop was to see some red eared slider turtles/other water turtles, bearded dragons and two water monitor lizards. Guests were allowed to hold the bearded dragons if they wished to do so. 

Moving on we were brought to the venomous reptile room, we were absolutely shocked how many snakes and other critters were houses in the building and how many terrifyingly deadly snakes they had. They had rattlesnakes (of course, can't be in AZ without those), but they also had cobras, black mambas, a gorgeous green mamba (never heard of these, only thought there were black mambas) and so many other species. The glass aquariums are right in front of you, which means the snakes were within a foot of your face so you can see every detail of the snakes. The sound of the angry rattlesnake who just had his cage cleaned was quite ominous. The employee who was in the room with us and our guides was also very friendly and happy to offer fun facts, information and answer questions. In this room the kids were able to hold a stunning gecko, I being me forgot to get the name of the specific species (I was busy taking photos of the snakes when it was first pulled out). The gecko was so soft, it was shocking just how soft he felt, almost like velvet. 

We were also very close to a number of alligators and crocodiles, so close in fact when you first come into the facility you have to sign a safety waiver and there are signs asking you not to put your fingers through the chain link fence & thus they aren't responsible if you decide to do something stupid. Why do they need these signs? Are they really that close? the answer is yes, they were within the same foot of space as you! While we were walking through their section some of the crocodiles had their tails resting directly next to the fence, to where you could just reach down and touch them (but myself and the herp society strongly recommend you don't). 

As mentioned before they take in a lot of animals that have been harmed, taken care of improperly or even just born with deformities, along the way you'll learn how they came into possession of some of them and what happened to them, some of their back stories are quite sad. One of the crocodiles is missing his tail, it is believed it was bitten off by another hungry crocodile, you can actually read his story here. They have one named "Grandma" that had a poor diet at the zoo she was at and thus has only a few teeth left. Many of the animals they are for have a lower rate of survival in the wild, and many would have been euthanized if they were not cared for by this facility. 

With so many animals on their property, you might be thinking "What if they have babies". It can and does happen frequently! In fact they have several breeding programs for the different animals and species, after they are incubated and hatch they are sent to a variety of different places to live out their lives. The last stop before we left was the non-venomous snake building (though don't be fooled by the name, there were a few venomous things like scorpions as well.) There were a lot of adorable snakes, lizards and critters in this building. We were able to hold a blue-tonged skink (the whole time I was ooing at how cute his tiny little feet were) and we had a chance to hold a snake. The only one who didn't hold the snake was my daughter, we were the last of the group to be in line to hold the snake so I got to be the last one to hold it and I was able to put it back into it's cage. 

The entire experience was exciting, it felt like we went on an adventure and we couldn't stop talking about everything when we got home. If you are ever in the Scottsdale, AZ area I highly recommend booking a tour with them, how many chances do you get to be that close to so many dangerous and also adorable animals? If you are too far away to visit, but would like to help the sanctuary out they are always in need of donations to help keep everything running. The tortoises alone eat about 3,600 pounds of food a week! The sanctuary has a amazon wishlist, a donation page and also virtual pet adoptions where you can sponsor a animal and check in on them when you want.

This last week we've had some unusual weather for being mid-May in Arizona, but we've all been loving the gorgeous weather and have been enjoying it while it lasts. Once the temperatures do start to rise, many Arizona residents will be looking for activities and events to keep them cool indoors to avoid the summer heat. If you have small children, Legoland Discovery Center AZ is a wonderful place to take them to escape the heat.

The Arizona Legoland Discovery Center is an indoor Lego play place specifically designed for children ages 3-10 (adults need to be accompanied by a child, unless they attend a special Adults only night). They have two fun rides, a 4D cinema, a large playground, several build stations, and more. Tickets are $19.95 per person which can get a little pricey, depending on how many times you plan on going this summer I highly suggest going for the annual pass which is $60 per person (with the family pass). With the season pass you get 1 year of admission into the center, 20% off in the cafe/gift shop and more. They do have a cafe but I would suggest eating before hand or heading to the food court in the mall for food, the cafe has movie theater quality and is a little expensive, we were a bit disappointed the last time we went and opted to have lunch there.

Overall it is a great place to escape bad weather and have some fun! You can stay an hour or you can stay several hours, there is plenty to keep young children entertained and there is plenty of seating for adults to sit, relax and watch their kids play. If you have the extra time they usually have deals where you can get a discounted ticket for the Sealife Aquarium right next door. Before leaving if your child wants to pick something up from the gift shop, I suggest checking out the corner of the gift shop on the right hand side as soon as you exit out of the center. This small corner usually has clearance products that can be as low as $1.
