"Don't Drink the Pink" the newest book from TaleBlade! + A Giveaway!

Some days can be extra stressful making it to where you want to escape to somewhere more relaxing, for most of us we can't simply just up and go so escaping to magical worlds through books is a wonderful alternative. I've always loved reading and picturing different worlds in my head as I read through the stories, and I love that my children have become big book worms as well. I recently received an email with an opportunity to check out the newest book being offered by TaleBlade which is called "Don't Drink the Pink", it was released on August 1st and comes in paper back, hard cover or digitally.

What is the book about? This book follow the special relationship between Madeline and her Grandfather as they share magical memories together on each of Madeline's birthdays. Madeline's grandfather is a chemist/scientist who creates magical potions that allow the drinker to be able to do different things, each year on her birthday she is allowed to choose one potion to try out "but don't drink the pink" and she gets to experience a magical ability for the day.

The book follows along on her crazy adventures all the way up until her fifteenth birthday when she is finally able to see what mysteries the pink potion holds. What secrets could such a small bottle hold? You'll have to read the book to find out, and let me tell you the secret that it held sure surprised me! I thought this book was quite imaginative, each page held an adventure coupled with beautiful illustrations. This book was written by B.C.R. Fegan who also wrote another favorite of ours called Don't ever look behind door 32, you can see our review of that book Here.

Writing gloves for a writer or book lover!

Aside from books have you ever wondered what to gift the book lover in your life for a birthday or Christmas? Sometimes it can be hard picking out books as a gift for someone if you don't know what type of books they enjoy reading, but Literary Book Gifts has you covered because they have a wide range of great gifts for book lovers. Including bags, gloves, shirts and more.

I was recently able to review a pair of writing gloves for a review, they are finger-less and come in thirteen different colors. This pair of gloves is made of a mixture of cashmere wool, cotton, polyester and a microfiber blend giving you a durable and breathable pair of gloves. They retail for $52. For the gloves I received for a review I selected the color black, mainly because it is the color I wear most so I wanted to be able to wear these out and have them match my outfit.

I enjoy wearing these gloves when I am writing in my journal, reading my books. I also enjoy wearing them when I am working on the computer at work because my office gets a bit chilly and my hands get cold because of it, plus look at how cute they are. My gloves are easy to travel with because they fold up into small little squares so they won't take up a lot of space in your bag, however I would tuck them into a clean pocket by themselves or in a small bag because they seem to attract pet/people hair. The gloves are a bit stretchy so you are able to get them over your hands without any issues. I haven't had any issues with them slipping down either, they stay securely in place. While I do think these gloves are comfortable, they aren't as soft as I thought they were going to be since they have 35% cashmere wool in the blend.

Price wise I'd have to say that I've sadly have bought gloves at a much lower price in the past that are just as comfortable as these. My favorite thing about these gloves is that even though they are finger-less they have a thumb hole which I really like plus the band around the wrist isn't tight so you aren't left with an imprint on your skin from where the fabric lines are. They do help keep my hands warm, you'd think my finger tips would get cold but because they keep a large portion of my hand warm it helps keep my fingers warmer as well.

Being a big bookworm at heart I always enjoy giving books as gifts to family members and friends I know love books as well. This year Candlewick Press sent us some great books that would make wonderful gifts and I wanted to share them with you here!

Into The Jungle: Stories for Mowgli

Retail: $24.99

I have to admit I have never read The Jungle Book but I enjoy the movie so I was pretty excited to see this in the box of books I received. This book contains five different stories; Before mother wolf was a mother, she was a fighter - Bagheera's Cage - Baloo's Courage - Kaa's Dance & Mowglli. Through out the book you'll find dozens of beautifully drawn and color illustrations including small butterflies on the pages and more. Each story ranges in length but none are shorter than 30 pages so you will get quite a bit of reading time out of this book. As a bonus it has a bookmark attached to help you keep your place.

Around The World In 80 Puzzles 

Retail: $19.99

Brain game books are always a lot of fun because they help keep you on your toes and keep your mind active. You can read them on your own or you can have someone sit next to you and see who can find the answers the fastest. This book is filled with find games which are similar to "Where's Waldo?" each page features a different theme such as Bikes, Ships, Light houses etc and it will ask you to locate two things. As an example the bike page I've shown you above asks you "Which bicycle is hanging by only one string?" & "Find a hidden pair of scissors to cut the bicycle free". Some of the pages are a bit harder than the others but it is a lot of fun trying to look for the answers. If you are having a hard time locating the correct spot you can find all the answers in the back of the book.

This is a fun book for all ages and would make a great gift anytime of the year.

City

Retail: $22.00

This book is HUGE and I don't mean that it is a thick book page wise, I mean the book itself measures 16" x 17 7/8". It is pretty neat seeing and reading a book that is so big but there are also two problems with it being this large, one it is a pain in the butt to store on most normal bookshelves and two the corners have been getting beat up since we don't have anywhere to properly store it.

The back of the book recommends this for ages 3-7 , however I'd say it is better suited for ages 2-5. This is a great picture book but aside from naming all of the different objects and places you'd see in a city there is no story to this book. Each illustration is colorful and fun to look over, I also like the different ways they incorporated the word on each page into the images themselves.

 Magnificent Birds by Narisa Togo - Retail Price $20.00

One of my favorite things is birds so I was quite excited when Candlewick Press sent me a book called Magnificent Birds. Instead of being a story book this is a fun birds facts book which gives you a break from your typical fact books that can be slightly boring for kids. Each bird has a two page spread which features a beautiful sketched image that look like a watercolor painting along with a bit of information about that bird. None of the pages are longer than two paragraphs, keeping everything short and sweet yet to the point. You'll find fourteen different birds featured in this book. The suggested age range for this book is 10-14 but I think it suits any age.

Do You Believe in Unicorns? by Bethanie Deeney Murguia- Retail Price $14.99

When I was younger I preferred dragons and gargoyles over Unicorns but now I love them all the same and have found myself drawn to cute unicorn products lately so this book was a cute surprise.

This fun and whimsical book is about a horse who enjoys wearing a tall red hat and the mystery of if the horse is hiding something under that hat. Could it be a horn? Maybe he was just having a messy hair day and didn't want everyone to see it. The story follows him along on his activities during the day then at the end you get to see what he was hiding under his hat. The pastels used in the illustrations of this book were pleasing to the eye. Do You Believe in Unicorns is short, each page contains one sentence so this book is perfect for younger kids just learning to read, the suggested age range is 3-7.

CandleWick Press is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to find books because of the wide range of books they sell for every age. I've shared several of their books with you in the past and now I am here to share a few more.

A World of Information Retail: $25 USD

When I was a kid I remember enjoying a lot of fantasy books but I also enjoyed a good book of information such as the survival books for kids so when I was offered a chance to review a book called "A World of Information" I knew it would be an instant hit but I didn't realize exactly how many subjects this book went over. This book is great not only for kids but it can also be very informative for adults as well, it goes over knot types, cloud classifications, the solar system, music notation, the greek alphabet, time zones & tectonic plates, and more. Each subject has two pages dedicated to it and since the book is so large measuring just over 10" x 14" it actually holds quite a bit of information on both pages. Everything is easy to understand and entertaining so it holds your attention. I'd say this book is well worth the price, and it is recommended for all ages it is never too soon or too late to learn something new.

The Wolf, The Duck, and the Mouse Retail: $17.99 USD

This is an interesting book to say the least, the book is the story about a mouse that gets swallowed by a wolf and a duck that he meets in the wolfs belly. Both make a home inside the wolf and eventually when a hunter tries to shoot the wolf both the duck and the mouse run out of the wolf and attack the hunter then they go to live back inside of the wolf. The whole thing seemed a bit odd to me and I do have to admit isn't one of my favorite books but I can see how it might be humerus to children since the idea of animals living inside of the belly of another animal is a bit silly. This book is recommended for ages 4-8.

Knightology: A True Account of the Most Valiant Knights Retail: $24.99 

This is another book that is packed full of information and it is a blast to read at the same time because it includes several interactive flaps, envelopes you can open, books within a book and more. As stated on their website "From the secret order of Round Table Knights comes a tell-all guide to the mythical occupation of knighthood — its history, mysterious quests, and puzzles that live on to this day." each page has a ton of information on each aspect of the life of a knight, there is even two pages that go over information on their horses which covers the different types of horses they used along with the different armor. Over all this is a fantastic book and is really great for the kids interested in knowing more about being a knight or about this time period.

Harry Potter: Magical Film Projections: Quidditch Retail: $16.99

This is a great gift for any Harry Potter lover, it is a 16 page book that features various scenes from the Harry Potter films. Each scene is featured as a black line illustrations on framed acetate page which allows you to shine a light through it to project the image onto the wall enlarging the scene which is a lot of fun. Each page also has information on what is happening in the scene. My daughter loves this book and it is sure to be cherished for quite some time. I found the image didn't enlarge quite as much as we thought it would but it was still a lot of fun. This is recommended for ages 7-10 but it would also make a great gift for any avid Harry Potter fans at any age.
